Connecticut Medal of Science Criteria
The Selection Committee will employ the following selection criteria in determining the winner of the Connecticut’s Medal of Technology:
1. Primary criterion: Extraordinary achievements in the development and widespread implementation of technology in one or more of these areas:
- process and/or product innovation,
- technology transfer,
- advanced manufacturing, and
- technology management.
2. Unique, ingenious or novel achievements in the widespread implementation of new or existing technologies as measured by documentation of achievement in the following areas:
- impact on commerce and society,
- benefits to mankind such as providing economically feasible environmental protection or improved health care or safety,
- the degree of risk-taking and methods of risk management, and
- the degree of vision, resolve and persistence involved as reflected in the number of barriers overcome.
3. Distinguished service in the general advancement of technology when accompanied by substantial contributions to the content of technology.
4. Widespread implementation of technology will be judged by the:
- breadth of market penetration as measured by the number of industrial sectors involved and/or depth of influence in one or more industrial sectors,
- impact on Connecticut exports,
- contribution to Connecticut’s competitiveness as measured by the degree of product use in Connecticut and/or other markets,
- extent of Connecticut prestige involved, such as the implementation of a technology with world-wide recognition,
- actual or potential return on investment as measured by the amount and duration of the return, and
- patents, copyrights and trademarks resulting, as measured by the number, timing and significance to the contribution.
5. A significant portion of the candidate’s work must have been performed in, or be associated with, an institution/organization/business located in Connecticut, at least in its more mature and developed stage and during which time the candidate must have been a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident who has applied for citizenship.
